Wildheart

It’s a good week for Toronto rock releases. Add to the list a live one from Wildheart, a relatively new band taking a risk by trying to capture their raucous concert experience on record so early on. But they prove themselves capable players, particularly guitarist Scotty B Goode, with Cody Vaillant’s big vocals front and centre.

Recorded at the Piston on Bloor West, it has a messy rawness that adds to the party vibe. You get the sense Wildheart are best experienced live, especially since the songs themselves could benefit from editing and an infusion of originality. Their brand of rock and roll takes its cues from hedonistic hard rock, with lyrics about gypsy souls and silver bullets and taking shelter from the storm.

Tambourines, scarves, Flying Vs – it’s all there. Fans of Toronto hard rock revivalists like Diemonds and the Mohrs will likely eat this up, or those who really did grow up on Coney Hatch.

Top track: I Say Hey

Wildheart launch Pumped At The Piston at Cherry Cola’s on Saturday (March 28).
