It might be a winter wonderland in Toronto tomorrow as heavy snowfall is set to come tonight, according to Environment Canada.

Toronto is under a winter weather travel advisory, with five to 10 cm of snow expected tonight. Snow is set to begin late this afternoon or early in the evening.

Heavy snow is set to blanket the city with between two and five cm an hour falling at peak times.

The city is also set to experience strong winds gusting up to 70 km/hour, resulting in blowing snow and reduced visibility. Temperatures are set to rise above freezing overnight, with the snow transitioning to periods of freezing rain as a result.

Environment Canada is advising people to stay home and avoid travelling if possible. Those who have to leave the house are urged to take care while walking and driving, and give themselves extra time due to hazardous conditions caused by the storm.

Local road conditions and other important information for travellers can be checked via the Ministry of Transportation’s website.

“If you’re going to be out on the roads remember to always have your full headlighting system on. Make sure your vehicle is clear of ice and snow before you head out,” Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP Highway Safety Division said in a video posted to X on Thursday.

“Make sure that you can see out of your mirrors so you know not only what’s going on in front of you, but beside you and behind you as well.”

“Give yourself lots of following distance. Distance gives you time, time is your friend. That allows you to slow down, change lanes or even stop if you need to in a critical situation,” Schmidt continued.

“Know what’s going on around you and drive to the conditions.”

Temperatures are set to reach 2 C on Saturday, with about 2 cm of snow expected. Strong winds are also in the forecast, with temperature falling to -2 C in the afternoon, feeling more like -10 C with the wind chill, and flurries overnight.

Cloudy conditions are on the way Sunday, with a 40 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -6 C.
