Dempsters is addressing food insecurity this back-to-school season

With school back in session, Canadian children are back to packing a lunch, and for many, it includes a sandwich. Unfortunately, not all families are able to afford lunch. Over 800,000 Canadians use the food bank each month, so Dempsters is addressing food insecurity this back-to-school season by donating two million slices of bread to local food banks across the country.

Until October 3, Dempsters is inviting Canadians to give back to their communities with its “buy a lunch, give a lunch” program. Whenever a Canadian purchases a loaf of Dempsters bread, the company will donate another loaf to a food bank for upwards of 110,000 loaves of bread. Dempsters is partnering with Food Banks Canada to realize this initiative and circulate the lunch staple through its coast-to-coast food bank network.

When Dempsters approached us about this generous donation, in support of food banks across Canada, we were thrilled, says Chris Hatch, CEO of Food Banks Canada. Having the support of partners like Dempsters is a great way to help their neighbours in a real and meaningful way, from coast-to-coast.

This donation drive brings two major Canadian priorities to the table: buying local goods and addressing food security.

We want to celebrate that Dempsters is made by Canadians, for Canadians, says Frayan Mama the senior marketing manager at Dempsters. We know Canadians value kindness and generosity, as do we, so we are asking our caring customers to join in to ‘buy a lunch to give a lunch’ to those who need it most.”

The top priority this back-to-school season for parents is ensuring the health and wellbeing children which includes packing a well-balanced lunch for each and every kids lunch.

When Canadians buy Dempsters bread this fall, theyll know that they are helping a fellow Canadian who is struggling to put food on the table. Its a simple action that has a big impact across the country, says Mama. At Dempsters, were proud to do our part and hope Canadians feel proud too when they purchase our product.

Food security remains a challenge for some Canadian parents. Food Banks Canada says that 40 per cent of food distributed throughout Canada is fresh, and donations of these kinds are essential to keeping Canadians nourished.

By purchasing a Dempsters loaf of bread before October 3, Canadians can pay it forward to those in need and be part of an exciting partnership dedicated to address food security. People interested in tracking the progress of this initiative can visit buyalunch.dempsters.ca.
