WHAT: Quinta de Camarate 2003(red) Rating: NNNN WHERE: Terra do Sado, Portugal
WHY : There are a number of yummy, inexpensive Portuguese wines in this Vintages release, and this one is no exception. It offers up a swarthy bouquet and lots of structured drinking action. If Portugal's still in the World Cup, wander up and down Dundas West with this bottle in your hand yelling, "Portugal - where they grow cork!" You'll be a star.
PRICE: 750 ml/$13.95
AVAILABILITY: At selected Vintages outlets as of June 24 (product #357962)
WHAT: Domaine Magellan Syrah/Grenache Vieilles Vignes 2003 (red) Rating: NNNN WHERE: Midi, France
WHY: Here's a great wine for the price. It's half Syrah and half Grenache, and I think it's the latter that really does the job. Syrah on its own can be a little tight, but here the Grenache - fruity and high in alcohol - puts it at ease. Vieilles Vignes means 20-year-old plus vines, which helps explain its appealing depth.
PRICE: 750 ml/$15.95
AVAILABILITY: At selected Vintages outlets (product #683722)

How could Pride weekend not be discussed in Drink Up? When it comes to fabulous drinks, look no further than the Savoy Cocktail Book (Pavilion), first printed in 1930. Below are a couple of Pride-appropriate cocktails adapted from its jaunty pages. See you at the parade. I'll be wearing the Wine Critics Don't Swallow T-shirt.
Fallen Angel Cocktail 1 dash Angostura Bitters, 2 dashes Crème de Menthe, the juice of 1 lemon, 1 jigger of gin. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass
Monkey Gland Cocktail 3 dashes absinthe, 3 dashes grenadine, 1/3 jigger orange juice, 2/3 jigger gin. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. firstname.lastname@example.org
