WHAT : Fumanelli Valpolicella Classico (red) Rating: NNN
WHERE : Veneto, Italy
WHY : There's a number of good affordable Italian reds in this week's Vintages release, but this one's especially tasty, not surprising given its Classico designation. It's clean and clear with a shrieker of a finish. All the better to cut through the smoke when you pull that steak off the grill.
PRICE : 750 ml/$13.95
AVAILABILITY : At selected Vintages outlets as of July 8 (product #687186)
WHAT : Henry of Pelham Pinot Noir 2004 (red) Rating: NNNN WHERE : Niagara Peninsula
WHY : This Pinot's a goody. Starts in the nose with a sweet woodsmoke quality, but that oakiness doesn't dominate this soft medium-bodied red. Though not cheap, it's a quality product that shows the care taken by a local winery. Drinkable now but capable of aging.
PRICE : 750 ml/$24.95
AVAILABILITY : At selected Vintages outlets as of July 8 (product #268391)
Sips and Nips
WHAT : Malivoire Cabernet Franc Icewine Rating: NNNN WHERE : Niagara Peninsula
WHY : Here's some more Niagara Viagra. For you, they went out in the freezing cold of January and hand-picked rock-hard little shrivelled grapes just so you could imbibe this sweet nectar. The best things in life are free. The next best things, like Ontario ice wine, usually cost a bundle.
PRICE : 200 ml/$34
AVAILABILITY : At selected Vintages outlets (product #685602)
