WHAT : Dr. Loosen Riesling 2005 (white) Rating: NNN
WHERE : Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany
WHY : Dr. Loosen - glad I didn't have to attend grade school with a name like that. But the revenge of growing up to own your own winery is sweet, and so are German Rieslings. Though I'd vote for a little more zip, this is an enjoyable example of the style. Great for rooty vegetarian stuff.
PRICE : 750 ml/$13.95
AVAILABILITY : At selected Vintages outlets as of February 17 (product #599274)
WHAT : Quails' Gate Chardonnay 2004 (white) Rating: NNNN
WHERE : Okanagan, BC
WHY : How about a little love for BC? Rain, snow, wind, David Foster, the Olympics: is there no end to their suffering? Luckily, they can drown their sorrows with tasty wines like this one. Lots of Chard for the price. Mineral in the nose with a very focused, enjoyable taste and a great finish.
PRICE : 750ml/$17.95
AVAILABILITY : At selected Vintages outlets as of February 17 (product #377770)
Sips and nips
WHAT : Bag it Back
WHERE : Not at a liquor store near you
WHY : As of now, you're paying a deposit on booze bottles, which you then reclaim at the the Beer Store. Only the LCBO would charge a deposit it won't refund. On the good side: less wasted glass, less landfill, bottle picking becomes a better career choice. On the bad side: unfair to people (especially non-drivers) who don't/can't go to the beer store. Even BC, home of the Olympics and David Foster, somehow manages to take bottle returns at liquor stores.
PRICE : Containers less than or equal to 630 ml/10¢; over 630 ml/20¢.
