WHAT: Bonizio Sangiovese di Maremma 2005 (red) Rating: NNN
WHERE: Tuscany, Italy
WHY: With the proliferation of fat, fruity wines, times are getting a little tricky for those of you who prefer a leaner vine. But have no fear, Sangiovese is still here. This economical manifestation has some cherry fruitiness, but it still brings the grape's rigour to the table.

WHAT: Secco-Bertani Valpolicella Valpantena 2004 (red) Rating: NNNN
WHERE: Veneto, Italy
WHY: Here's a perfect one for Father's Day. Underneath its full, accessible fruit flavours are darker notes of, as they say in winespeak, leather and spice. So you can reference two time-honoured colognes, English Leather and Old Spice, in one bottle of wine. Bastards shouldn't hestitate to buy this either. It's mighty fine.
