Purchased in 2003 by Ian Macleod Distillers Ltd., one of Scotland’s last remaining independent family-owned spirits companies, the Glengoyne distillery is nestled in the broody hills not far from Glasgow. Its long distillation process – reflected in Glengoyne’s motto, “Unhurried since 1833” – produces an incredibly sweet new distillate that carries through into the finished whisky. The 15-year-old, aged in a combination of first-fill bourbon and sherry casks, is my favourite Glengoyne expression – especially when it comes to dessert. Pretty on the nose (I get Asian pear, ginger and nutmeg fruit, toffee and orange peel), it drinks sweet and weightily with a bit of bristle for lift.
