Irish Whiskey 101: What to drink

Jameson Irish Whiskey

This old, reliable Irish whiskey is the one you’re most likely to see slammed into Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day (aka amateur night), but it’s a standard for a reason. Soft, flavourful and smooth, Jameson’s triple-distilled blend is an accessible easy sipper straight or on the rocks, even for those who are more likely to mix their whiskey with Coke. You’re far better off using it to give your coffee a kick.

Bushmills Malt 10-year-old

Though Ireland is better known for its blends, Bushmills proves that single-malt isn’t Scotland’s exclusive domain. It’s produced at what’s generally considered the world’s oldest licensed distillery (though not all Irish will be quick to claim it, since it’s in Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK), and Irish barley and 10 years of aging in American bourbon barrels create a whiskey that’s sweet and sophisticated, if a bit light.

Green Spot Irish Whiskey

This pot still whiskey is produced independently by Irish Distillers (the team behind Jameson, among others) and, due to the small production quantities, its supply has often been limited to Ireland. However, if you’re lucky and look in the right outlets (Queens Quay and Yonge are safe bets), you can grab a bottle at the LCBO. Green Spot is prized by whiskey drinkers for its complex blend of sweet, spicy, fruity aromas and flavours, but it’s certainly not a steal. A cheaper alternative to Scotch? Nae.
