Lavender French 75

Recently, I had Momma Bear over for brunch. No one, especially a drinks writer, wants her mother to think she starts hitting the bottle before noon, but I sheepishly slid a bottle of sparkling out of the fridge, because what’s brunch without bubbles? Turns out I needed to flash-chill two more bottles over the course of the afternoon. The moral: moms often need an excuse to unwind and deserve to be pampered. So mix this simple, seasonal twist on a French 75 for your Number One Lady this Sunday – she might just have another.

  • 1 oz      Aviation gin (or another floral, American-style gin)
  • ¾ oz    fresh lemon juice
  • ¾ oz    lavender syrup*

Shake well and fine-strain into a flute or coupe.

Top with 3 oz sparkling wine.

Garnish with a sprig of dried lavender.

* For the syrup, simmer 1 cup water with 2 tablespoons dried lavender for five to seven minutes. Add 1 cup sugar, dissolve and let cool before straining out lavender. Will keep in the fridge for up to a week.
