WHAT: Olvisholt Brugghus Lava Imperial Stout (ale) Rating: NNNN
WHERE: Iceland
WHY: The image of an exploding Icelandic volcano on the label had the jury for the 2010 Unfortunate Marketing Coincidence Prize all set to award first place to Olvisholt Brugghus. That is, until a particular Burlington family restaurant with the name Russell Williams was brought to their attention. Quite suitably, this is a smoked stout, but the smoke flavour avoids the wet ashtray effect. The resulting 9.4 per cent beer is a very warm, fruity, complex yet not heavy-handed brew. Drink a few of these and you’ll be the only person who can pronounce Eyjafjallajokull.
PRICE: 500 ml/$5.70
AVAILABILITY: At selected Vintages outlets (product #187005)
