Boozy summer read

Love drinks? Love gardening? Amy Stewart, the award-winning author of Wicked Plants, sheds light on the mysterious roots, herbs, fruits and flowers that flavour our favourite sips. Witty and compelling, with an encyclopedic format that doesn’t require a cover-to-cover commitment, The Drunken Botanist ($23.95 Algonquin) includes recipes and fun trivia – the beginnings of a fantastic lawn party. Grab it at Good Egg (267 Augusta, 416-593-4663) for $24.

Rock Lobster bar rocks

Fancy a tipple with your lobster tail? Less than a year after settling on the Ossington strip, Rock Lobster Food Co. has opened a sister location in the Shanghai Cowgirl of yore (583 Queen West). Besides offering more extensive sea and land options, Matt Pettit has recruited a stellar bar team for his resto du jour, including Robin Wynne (Fynn’s of Temple Bar), Nishan Nepulongoda (Blowfish), Josh Prout (the Oxley) and Aaron Beaudoin (Goods and Provisions). Expect an evolving cocktail program from these masterminds of mix, from inventive riffs on classics to house barrel-aged beer.

Macallan’s colour code

With the release of Macallan’s 1824 Series, the legendary Speyside single malt loses its age designation in favour of colour-coded labels highlighting the whisky’s unique aging process in Spanish and American sherry-conditioned oak casks. The entire range – Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby – is now available at the LCBO. No need to get uppity, diehards. The new Macallan offerings do the dynasty proud. Age is just a number, ya know.
