Tasting notes

Home of the Brave opening at 589 King West

Home of the Brave, team La Carnita’s take on American comfort food, will feature (naturally) an American-themed bar. Opening August 15, the 20-seater helmed by barman Taylor Corrigan, formerly of Origin, will feature a list of classic and obscure American cocktails, as well as signature recipes from U.S. bartenders. Rumours of a quality whisky selection and a slushie machine serving Jack and Cokes have us humming The Star-Spangled Banner….

Scout’s Honour

The former Mr. Pong’s Bar has flipped into Scout’s Honour (1576 Dundas West, at Sheridan), a fresh take on Canadiana. The summer-camp-themed space is trimmed with picnic tables, forested wallpaper and cocktails in tin mugs. Meet you in the mess hall.

Boozy Book: The Punch Bowl

Dip into the hottest drink trend of the moment with Dan Searing’s The Punch Bowl, a concise history of the communal-serve ritual complete with 75 recipes from four centuries of inebriation. $17.95 at BYOB, 972 Queen West, 416-858-2932.
