Weezie's, 354 King East, at Power, 416-777-9339
Little did Constance Guitard realize when she opened her humble Corktown cantina back in 06 that, only two years later, the simple food at her little neighbourhood restaurant would be heralded as a solace in hard times. Seems that when the economy tanks, the public turns to reassuring comfort food like Weezie's.
We've been fans of Guitard's straightforward card - nostalgic noshes like classic macaroni 'n' cheese, shepherd's pie, a simple cheeseburger with fries - from the get-go.
"I've always liked the European idea of going out to eat whenever you like and not just on special occasions," says Guitard, who operates Weezie's with a staff of one.
"That's the kind of restaurant we've been right from the start. I've got 30 seats and a very good server. Something seems to be working."
