Mention the words soup kitchen, and most people conjure up the image of a street urchin asking in a cocker-knee accent if they could please have some more, sir. Far from Dickensian, Ravi Kanagarajah’s (pictured) 18-month-old soup emporium is the Rolls Royce of the genre.
The Clubland condo ‘n’ office crowd slurp meal-size bowls of curried apricot with lentils, corn chowder with fresh blue crab and Thai basil, and South Indian-style lamb with barley and edamame, all complemented with house-baked cheddar biscuits.
Does the former Mildred Pierce sous and current Nine of Dine nominee (vote for Toronto’s best up-and-coming chefs at nowtoronto.com/nineofdine) ever get sick of soup?
“Never,” laughs Kanagarajah. “Making soup is very therapeutic. I do it every day!”
