Vegan pizza hits T.O.

Here’s some good news for vegans, pizza lovers and people in the middle of that Venn diagram: the Apiecalypse is finally upon us. After outgrowing basement digs in Mirvish Village, Apiecalypse Now (735 Bloor West, at Grace, 416-516-4555, eatveganpizza.com) is back in action with a new spot across from Christie Pits that puts the pizza front and centre.

In a tiny take-away that once housed La Burrita, the vegan bakery just wrapped up a month of soft-open days with a grand opening on the May 30 weekend. Starting tomorrow, you can get puffy-crusted slices decked out with vegan sauces and cheeses and not-meats for less than $4.25 a pop.

The White Walker teams a thick slathering of creamy garlic sauce and remarkably convincing soy chicken with organic arugula, and a kitchen sink’s worth of faux meats tops the Pig Destroyer Destroyer (so named because it destroys pizzas that destroy pigs – obviously). Because this is the single the most metal vegan pizza joint in Toronto, you can also nosh on a BBQ Buffalobotomy (featuring buffalo-sauced “chicken”) or summon up a Slayer (margherita with a hot-sauce pentagram). If you’re lucky, they’ll be serving up their already infamous vegan macaroni and cheese pie.

Got a sweet tooth? They’ve got you there, too. A bakery case features some surprisingly stunning cupcakes in a handful of flavours, alongside similarly gorgeous (if rather oil-heavy) fried donuts adorned with Technicolour icing. Just in time for summer, there’s dairy-free soft serve with ice-cream-truck-style sundae sauces. Check the labels on the squirt bottles: caramel, strawberry, “what flavour is blue?” Point to this place the next time someone tells you vegans are no fun.
