Big Slice closes on Yonge St.

Bad news for downtown pizza lovers – particularly those partial to doughy, greasy, gross-but-you-love-it slices that magically taste better after midnight. Venerable Yonge St. pizzeria, and staple of NOW’s Best Pizza lists, Big Slice has shut down after more than 45 years in business.

Staff were seen handing out the pizzeria’s final slices to the homeless Monday morning before closing and clearing out the shop at 385 Yonge St. The entire block is slated to be demolished to make room for two new condo developments.

But there is hope: You can still get those alcohol-absorbing slices at the pizzeria’s other location in the west end (1154 St Clair West, at Westmount, 416-651-7777, bigslicerestaurant.com). Additionally, a note posted on the restaurant’s front door says another Big Slice pizzeria – in an as-yet-undisclosed spot – in the works.
