Detroit-style pizza is coming to Leslieville

Descendant Pizza (1168 Queen East, at Jones) will take over the old Amaya Express spot in Leslieville, offering Detroit-style pizza.

Though Toronto has seen its share of Sicilian, Chicago- and New York-style ‘za, owner and pie maker Christopher Getchell says this will be the the city’s first foray into Detroit-style. Baked in a well-oiled square pan, the dough is chewy with a crust that has a fried texture. Similar to Chicago’s, it’s topped with sauce (but after it comes out of the oven), which is sometimes dubbed the “red top” pizza.

Getchell opted for the name Descendant Pizza because the Detroit-style pie is a descendant of Sicilian. Though delivery will come after opening, the plan now is for a 20-seat restaurant that offers slices at lunch and full pies in the evening, in either small or large sizes.

The new restaurant will open no later than June 1.
