Greek Beat

Rating: NNNNN

generalizations are exactly that — generalizations — but most of the Greek grub served on the Danforth tastes exactly the same. There are alternatives, though — Cuban at La Carreta, Indian at Sher-E-Punjab, as close to authentic Mexican as you’ll find north of two borders at El Sol — and Athens Pastries (509 Danforth at Logan, 416-463-5144) extends the options.

The selection is limited, but this Mediterranean bakery produces delightful phyllo pastry layered around spinach (spanokopita), ground beef (kreatopita) and nippy feta cheese (tiropita).

For dessert, there’s bougatsa (all $2.90), a puff pastry treat drizzled with honey and dusted with cinnamon. If you’re in a DIY mood, Athens sells phyllo dough for $2.25 a pound.

And so, with apologies to Martha and the Vandellas, I declare that summer’s here and the time is right for eating in the street.
