Grilled Cheese burned by wage theft allegations

The Grilled Cheese, a popular Kensington Market sandwich joint that does pretty much what it says on the label, has been temporarily shuttered after a handful of employees came forward alleging wage theft, threatening remarks and shady conduct from management.

Global News reports that an investor in the restaurant confirmed the closure of the eatery following weekend reports of misconduct by restaurant management.

Last week, employee Kris Kadas wrote a Reddit post detailing his experiences at the Grilled Cheese, claiming he had not been paid since May 20, and that owner Robbie Yuill owed staff a combined $6,000. Staff were paid under the table, leaving no paper trail for the Ontario labour board to investigate, and Kadas claims that Yuill often responded to complaints with threats of violence. Yulli has not responded to reporters’ efforts to contact him.

“As of (last week) the doors have been locked and the owner is nowhere to be found,” Kadas wrote on Reddit. “He has done this before and reopened with a new team only to screw them over as well. When and if the place becomes operational again please do not give your money to a terrible person.”

Since Kadas’s account was published, several others have come forward with their own stories, and the Ontario Ministry of Labour has confirmed it is now investigating two complaints from workers.

Hopefully this ends with everyone getting their cheddar back.
