Kitty corner from messini, behind the fountain in Alexander the Great Parkette, Alexandros has been serving its “world famous” gyros since 1996. There’s also a second outlet at the foot of Yonge (5 Queens Quay West, 416-367-0633).
Its grilled Greek-style pita wraps are the most expensive we sample – pork or chicken $5 – and the smallest. The meat’s a little more well-done than we prefer, but the tomatoes are ripe, the tzatziki has tzing and the optional feta ($1) is of superior quality.
Fries come two ways: plain ($2), frozen and reconstituted like Messini’s, or topped with feta and doused with Greek salad dressing ($3.50). Does Alexandros ever put them inside its gyros?
“We’ll do it if somebody asks,” says manager Nick Bournas. “But most people like to eat them separately.”
