It’s a bird, it’s a no, it’s Super Noodle

Though the face of Spadinas Chinatown has begun to change with modern restaurants like R&D, Peoples Eatery and Lucky Red, its nice to know that there is still room for a new restaurant that only looks like its been there for 20 years. Super Noodle, opened just one month ago, has a large menu of specialty noodles pulled from the streets of Lanzhou, the capitol of Gansu province, in north-western China.

Noodles come three different ways here traditionally hand-pulled, stir-fried or the curiously labelled Robot-Cut. The latter are machine-made and are harder and wider than the softly chewy hand-pulled version. The machine itself (imported from China) sits omnipotently in the back of the restaurant, looking like it was pulled from a Power Rangers set sale. But damn, does this robotic overlord ever slice a mean noodle. Rounding out the encyclopedic menu of noodles are dishes like pork pancakes and a selection of small barbecue plates and skewers.

The place is already bustling with crowds who slurp away like theyve been going for years. And with hearty bowls of beef brisket soup for $7.99 and pitchers of “dry” beer starting at $5.50, it doesnt take a robot to figure out why.

358 Spadina. Open Monday-Sunday, 11am-11pm. Licensed. Washrooms in basement.
