Mac and cheese attack

We love our food festivals (really, any chance to walk around eating non-stop for hours) and now mac and cheese is getting its own.

The Toronto Mac and Cheese Festival is set for June 5 to 7 at Liberty Market Building (171 East Liberty, at Hanna). Organizers promise you won’t be faced with the chaotic lineups that have dogged previous fests. They’ve taken logistics into account and, by spreading the festival over three days, they hope to control the crowds.

The participant list is still growing, but so far vendors like Cheesewerks, Junked Food Company and H Bar will all be on site.

Entry is free, with hungry guests using a token system – $10 for eight, $20 for 20. The organizers say the price range for a sample runs between one and eight tokens – presumably, the eight token options will have pricier toppings.

Unused tokens can be donated back to the festival’s partner, Foodshare Toronto. There are also plans for an open mic night (details are still to come) to help promote emerging artists. And with a $5,000 reward for People’s Choice mac and cheese, it’s safe to assume these offerings will be decidedly more gourmet than the stuff from the blue and yellow box.

Friday, 6 to 10 pm Saturday, 11 am to 11 pm Sunday, noon to 4 pm, macandcheesefestival.ca
