As you can imagine, NOW gets some mighty strange messages on its voice mail. And while I often receive suggestions from readers that are physically impossible, none caught my attention so much as the one I got the other day.
"Dude, I'm wasted," my informer told me, inhaling deeply. "I just wanted to point out that as far as an essential wastoid burger is concerned - the Sizzler! The Sizzler at Yonge and the old College, there. They make a mean burger and a cheap one. You should fuckin' sort that out. Hey, godspeed! Go, local sports teams! (Cough!) How about that weather? Legalize it!"
It seems this Sizzler is a non-descript Greek-style fast food joint on the Yonge Street strip that not only stays open every night till 5 am, but delivers that late as well.
"Most of our customers come after the bars close," offers the nice woman behind the brightly lit counter who indeed makes one righteous burger. A solid quarter-pound of char-grilled hand-formed ground round, it rides a regulation sesame seed bun and gets run through the garden lettuce, onion, tomato, hot banana peppers and mayo ($3.25).
At lunch, the burger is part of a $3.99 combo that includes acceptable fries and a drink. Pass on the chicken wings a half dozen scrawny mid-sections and wingtips doused in Frank's Red Hot ($3.99) and make sure to ask them to hold the sauce when ordering the whole rotisserie chicken ($10.99) unless you're a fan of the bottled stuff. Or particularly baked.
