a few blocks east, on the baldwin strip, Yung Sing Pastry Shop (22 Baldwin, at McCaul, 416-979-2832) has been pumping out bargain-basement buns since the 70s. On a recent visit to this long-time favourite, I’m shocked to discover that the Chinese bakery has increased its prices: the dozen or so varieties no longer cost 90 cents each, but instead an inflationary 98 cents! Still a major meal deal, though.

The bun recipe seems to have been modified, too, now resembling a McDonalds-style hamburger helper. But the fillings — minced beef in mild gravy, sweet-and-sour pork, various Chinese veggies, thick, scrambled-egg-like tofu — still cause lunchtime lineups. But while they’re priced right, too, chicken fried rice and vegetarian fried rice (both $2.90) are as unappetizing as the Big Mac-esque styrofoam containers they come in.
