Home to long-running top taste and the now-shuttered Winark, Bloor and Dovercourt has been a favourite corner for cabbies to grab a quick fix of Jamaican jerk since the 70s. But anyone looking for a curry in a hurry should steer well clear of Pam's Caribbean Kitchen, a four-year-old roti resto that prides itself on being "the not-so-fast takeout."
Owner Pam Singh should be applauded for taking so much care with her often fiery grub, but I think most will agree that waiting 20 minutes for a roti when you're the only customer in the joint is pushing it. However, the results really are worth the wait.
Ranging from 20 to 22 ounces, Pam's Guyana-style dhalpoori are indeed made from scratch, from their slightly oily shells to their spice-tastic fillings. We're particularly fond of her veggie wraps (all made with organic produce she picks up at the Dufferin Grove farmers market), particularly the carrot and slivered green bean roti ($7) laced with butternut squash and finely diced sweet red bell pepper. Send them into overdrive with a shot of Pam's incendiary red chili sauce or minty green relish.
