Catering to those who have to watch their wallets regardless of the day, Baldwin Village bakery Yung Sing has been selling budget-friendly buns loaded with barbecued pork and curried beef (95 cents) since the 70s. Recently, the crowded plant-strewn room has introduced inexpensive weekend-only dim sum to its lineup of super-cheap eats.
Fluted, translucent har gow ($3.50 for six) come stuffed with surprisingly sizable shrimp, while tiny pinched pork siu mai ($3 for six) get deliciously top-knotted with red chili. Best of the lot, rice-papered wraps hold a tasty mix of shredded shrimp, snow peas, scallions and crunchy Chinese celery under their wake-up dressing of minced garlic ($2.75 for three).
Gung hay fat choy to you, too.
