The staff at Zena’s Cafe couldn’t be any friendlier. A cozy eat-in and takeout luncheonette, Zena’s serves up nicely executed home cooking that’s popular with east-siders. Daily specials include barbecued chicken souvlaki with grilled veggies and corn on the cob ($6.75), and old-school macaroni and cheese ($5.50). Both come with a green salad or large bowl of soup. Served hot, the pulpy puree of tomato-garlic is even better cold the next day.
My office co-workers adore the three-salad assortment ($4.95). Roasted veggies (butternut squash, red and green peppers, red onions, baby potatoes, cherry tomatoes) dressed with a tart raspberry vinaigrette, two-tone ricotta-stuffed tortellini, and tabouleh make a major feast that will fuel anyone till well past suppertime.
