steak out
Much weeping of crocodile tears accompanied the shuttering of Lindy’s (403 Yonge), the bargain-basement steak house straight out of Toronto’s dinosaur dining scene. Canned peas, instant mashed potatoes and grey steaks so over-tenderized they could be squished by forks won’t be missed. But the joint’s campy 50s decor — shiny red naugahyde booths complete with personal jukeboxes and Bonanza-style cow horns everywhere — will be.
spot off
Named for a Captain Beefheart album, swanky pool hall Clear Spot (489 College) has called it a day after deciding against its landlord’s offer of a substantial rent increase. Also, look for North York pizza palazzo Pizzaiolo to open behind the brown paper in the window of 624 Queen West once the city’s building inspectors have done their bureaucratic thing. That’ll be Christmas.
