Despite denials from head office that he was about to open an outpost of his Milk Bar on the second floor of Momofuku in the Shangri-la, David Chang did exactly that last weekend.
Quel surprise! The Milk Bar scenario was obvious from the get-go. What else would a glassed-in refrigerated box the size of a shipping container on the tony hotel’s mezzanine be other than a retail outlet selling his off-the-wall desserts? Valet fur storage?
The set-up’s self-serve. You grab a basket and fill it with as much shipped-in swag as possible – compost cookies made with crumbled pretzels and potato chips ($2), prepackaged slices of crack pie ($6) and all manner of Milk Bar and Momofuku-logo’d swag – before paying downstairs by the door.
And as for the fabled $48 10-inch pie? When we have a hankering for a butter tart, we’ll go to Sweet Bliss on Queen East in Leslieville, where they’re 3 bucks a pop.
