Openings, closings, events and other news from T.O.’s food and drink scene

La vida locos

If Chinatown at Spadina and Dundas is the next big culinary frontier (expect the arrival of Lucky Red from the Banh Mi Boys and the People’s Eatery from the crew behind 416 Snack Bar any day now), Chinatown East at Gerrard and Broadview is sure to be the next big nabe after that.

Look no further than the launch last week of Chino Locos (368 Broadview, at Gerrard, 647-349-3888, chinolocos.com, @chinolocos). Victor Su and Minh La opened their first East-meets-Mex burrito shop at Queen and Greenwood six years ago. And while the menu remains virtually the same, the resto that thinks nothing of stuffing tortillas with chow mein and jerk chicken now draws the line at green peppers.

“A lot of our customers don’t like them, so it’s easier to just not have them at all,” laughs La.

Out to lunch

Named the fourth-hottest restaurant in Hogtown by you-know-who, Playa Cabana spinoff Barrio Coreano (642 Bloor West, at Manning, 416-901-5188, playacabana.ca/locations/5/barrio-coreano, @barriocoreano) is now open from noon Tuesday through Sunday. Who needs eggs Benny for weekend brunch when there’s Korean-fried lobster ‘n’ rice?

Earth turfed

Out on the Danforth, Ed Ho of the Globe (124 Danforth, at Broadview, 416-466-2000, thinkglobaleatlocal.ca, @globeho) is flying solo now that his Earth Rosedale at Yonge and Roxborough has been shuttered due to a landlord dispute. Ho was forced to close Earth Bloor West last year when that building was sold to a condo developer.

House moves

Taking up the locavore slack, Darcy MacDonell’s none-more-rustic Farmhouse Tavern in the Junction Triangle has traded in rusty old tractor parts for sleek subway tiles at its nearby Farmer’s Daughter (1588 Dupont, at Franklin, 416-546-0626, @DupontDaughter) sequel. Ex-Momofuku Daisho sous Léonie Lilla promises a seafood-centric carte.
