Hey Rosetta!

Second Sight (Sonic/Warner)

Rating: NNNN

St. John’s band Hey Rosetta! have become one of the most appreciated rock acts in Canada, thanks in large part to their swelling, textured sound. The seven-member band has always stretched beyond typical rock limitations with its decidedly cinematic sound. While 2011’s Seeds was no less grandiose, its darker turns have been replaced with more uplifting material. The band has grown adept at making their swelling choruses much more unpredictable, and that’s become part of the fun.

Their fourth full-length is packed with longer string- and keyboard-heavy tracks: Alcatraz evolves from simple, humble guitar strumming into an engrossing slice of symphonic pop. And even shorter tunes like the playful Dream contain the kind of hopeful harmonies that make it feel substantial and powerful.

Calling it their pinnacle might be premature, but Second Sight is so damn invigorating that it may just be their best yet.

Top track: Gold Teeth

Hey Rosetta! play the Danforth Music Hall February 12 and 13.
