We Are Humber: Samyuktha Sharath Punthambekar

As part of this month’s NOW x Humber Digital Residency, we’re profiling faculty and alumni from the Humber community. See all of the profiles here.

What program did you take at Humber?

I’m a graduate of the Arts Administration and Cultural Management program.

What is your industry role?

Professional freelancer.

What’s one skill students looking to enter your field absolutely must know?

Be a constant learner. This is gained by actively volunteering in the community.

What is the most memorable experience you’ve had working or learning at Humber?

Everything! This was my first overseas international qualification, and for me just being exposed to a new college and meeting new people was exciting. The program’s networking sessions and hands-on projects, such as the Capstone course, were the most memorable.

Describe something that inspires you about your industry.

I am hungry to learn and I thrive on being all-consumed and “knowing it all” about the arts community. Constant professional development is something that inspires me. My motto has always been “learn while you earn and earn while you learn.”

The internet and digital technology have upended many creative arts disciplines. How does your Humber program prepare arts professionals for these challenges?

The Arts Administration and Cultural Management program gives us hands-on projects, tools and assignments to consider from a creative and wholistic approach. It also gives us an overall perspective about Toronto, Canada and a peek into world arts. I have now expanded my learning at Humber and call 2018 as an expansion of the program. My focus this year is to professionally develop with mentors and other artists in the city on aspects that intrigued me at Humber and to further hone my skills as an emerging arts leader in the community.

What’s your favourite Toronto festival?

Fall for Dance North, Fringe, and TIFF. My husband and I particularly enjoy discovering new music festivals and food festivals.

Name a person or organization in your industry who is doing work that you find innovative or inspiring.

Ilter Ibrahimof, the artistic director of Fall for Dance North. He has a brilliant mind with a beautiful soul and is an inspiration to me.
