Montreal’s highly-rated Igloofest might be expanding to Toronto this winter.
Buried in the Toronto and East York Community Council agenda was an October 25 staff report recommending that Igloofest be granted permission to “operate a beer/wine garden, host a ticketed event, solicit donations and use special effects pyrotechnics at their events to be held on Nathan Phillips Square” from February 17 to 20.
The original outdoor event is a winter offshoot of the long-running summer series Piknic Electronik, which takes over Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau every Sunday in the warmer months.
Piknic Electronik’s organizers would not confirm to NOW that Igloofest is hitting Toronto, but they did admit the city is one of the locations being considered.
If Igloofest does touch down in Toronto, it won’t be the first outdoor winter dance music festival to attempt to get local partiers dancing in the snow, but unlike previous parties, this one focuses less on commercial EDM and more on underground club culture.
The upcoming edition of the Montreal festival includes veteran DJs Carl Craig and Kenny Dope, as well as newer talents such as Jimmy Edgar, Lunice and Kim Ann Foxman.
