Joe Satriani: The Satch Tapes (Epic Music, 2003) Rating: NNN
G3 is what Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen call themselves when they gather for joint concerts, each performing separately with the band and then joining for a big jam at the end. In other words, this is the perfect DVD for anyone whose favourite masturbation aid is a back issue of Guitar Player magazine.
There's an awful lot of guitar playing here, with Satriani in particularly good form and a spectacular collaboration on Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing. The jam on Voodoo Chile (A Slight Return) is less successful, as there's simply less room in the composition.
The concert filming is fairly standard, and while Vai has aged gracefully into an odd carbon of Steve Jobs, someone should tell Malmsteen that once you hit a certain weight it may be time to reconsider the open-coat, no-shirt look.
The Satch Tapes offers mostly historical footage, including interviews with producer Andy Johns and very funny bits with Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), the videos from Surfing With The Alien and Flying In A Blue Dream and interviews with Satriani.
It's an hour-long compilation, mostly for fans, though it's kind of fun to see video directors trying to figure out what to do with a guy whose songs seldom have lyrics and who studiously resists the glamour process.
