Just announced Toronto shows: celebrate The Weeknd’s new album Starboy at iHeartRadio’s inaugural Jingle Ball

Plus: Dilly Dally, WayHome For The Holidays, Drive By Truckers and more

The Weeknd isn’t wasting time.

Just over a year after his Beauty Behind The Madness album topped charts in the U.S. and Canada, Scarborough’s finest is prepping the follow-up, Starboy, for a November 25 release. The Daft Punk-produced title track is already a pop hit, having debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. And the video extends the retro-synth vibe with a darkly glamorous neon aesthetic that seems to be cribbed from both the TV series Knight Rider and the walls of a Vegas wedding chapel.

Torontonians will not have to wait long to see the Weeknd perform the material live: he’s headlining the inaugural iHeartRadio Canada Jingle Ball at the Air Canada Centre, also on November 25.

Several of-the-moment pop stars, plus a couple of previously of-the-moment acts, are also on the bill: the Chainsmokers (whose Halsey-featuring Closer is the current number one), Brampton singer/songwriter Alessia Cara, pop-punkers Hedley and country-tinged pop singer Serena Ryder.

Hip-hop is represented by Weeknd collaborator Belly (famous for recent single Might Not and cancelling a Jimmy Kimmel appearance to boycott Donald Trump), American artist Kent Jones and Kardinal Offishall, on hand to promote his iHeartRadio show, The Kardi Party.

The concert extends the iHeartRadio concert series into Canada for the first time. The terrestrial and digital radio aggregator app is operated here by Bell Media and, just like big corporations like Apple south of the border, the media giant is clearly aiming to take a big bite of the music pie.

The company’s president of entertainment production and broadcasting, Randy Lennox, told NOW earlier this year that he wants to make Bell “much more ubiquitous in the music space,” and part of that may include a revamp of the once-essential MuchMusic brand.

At the Air Canada Centre (40 Bay), November 25, 7 pm. $55-$149. ticketmaster.ca.
