Market staple My Little Dumplings opening east end kitchen
Up until now, getting to sample Bashir Munye’s dumplings required a little bit of luck. The Somali-born chef and his My Little Dumplings outfit have spent the past few years rotating around the farmer’s market and food fest circuit, where he’d stuff and top gnocchi and bao with savoury fillings lifted from African, Asian, Caribbean and Mediterranean cuisines.
Thanks to a successful Indiegogo funding campaign, you won’t have to check Munye’s events calendar before getting to scarf those little suckers down any longer: He’s announced plans to open a permanent kitchen and storefront in Leslieville (1372 Queen East, in the former home of Kindred Spirits Catering).
The eatery will open in the spring, but before then, they’ll be in soft launch mode: “Every Tuesday to Friday, we will be serving up a few of our market favourites as well as new menu items,” Munye writes in an email. Expect to see old faves like dumplings stuffed with edamame, coconut curry, harissa-spiced lamb and more than a few Caribbean recipes. Don’t gnocchi it until you’ve tried it.
