A fashion week day in the life of… Evan Biddell

Evan Biddell comes off as a fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants kind of designer. The sort of free fashion spirit who’s still hemming a dress as a model walks onto the catwalk.

But, for this season at least, nothing could be further from the truth. The Spring 2013 collection he presented yesterday was 90 per cent sold before it hit the runway so Biddell had time to spend the hours leading up to the show enjoying a coffee at Leslieville’s Mercury Espresso before getting his hair cut.

The multimedia presentation opened with a short film featuring fabric floating slowly around a model to an original score by Cris Derksen. The 14 looks that followed included covetable leather jackets with fringe details and colourful pop art print pieces paired with fishtail braids and mammoth jewellery.

Here’s what Biddell has to say about his fashion week day.

What are three words that describe your Spring 2013 collection?

Disheveled, off-kilter, audacious.

Can you sleep the night before a show?

More like how long can I sleep in before a show?!

What are some of your show day rituals?

Finding a new cute boy to kiss. I also head over to FUSS to get a haircut.

What’s the one interview question you never want to be asked again?

“Tell me the inspiration behind your line.”

How do you celebrate after the show?

I usually have an after party. This year I’m hosting an intimate fashion installation at the Spoke Club on Friday night where I will also be speaking (ooh la la). Then we’ll be letting loose on the roof.
