A fashion week day in the life of… Lucian Matis

No other Toronto designer keeps up appearances quite like Lucian Matis.

Though shoppers are starting to know him better for MATIS, the lower priced line he’ll debut this evening under the fashion week tent, his brand gets the bulk of its buzz from the over the top shows he presents under the Lucian Matis label.

Last night’s spectacle at the Royal York Hotel was his most decadent spectacle yet featuring a parade of macramé lace gowns and feather pieces in mostly black.

Our Stefania Yarhi followed Matis and his team throughout show day, from an early morning TV spot on Global through errand runs to pick up the collection’s gowns, the step-and-repeat wall of sponsor logos and the pasties that were the talk of the show (many wondered, why create such a sheer collection and then start covering things up?).

Here’s Matis’ take on fashion show day including the one (obvious) interview question he never wants to answer again:

What are three words that describe your Fall 2012 collection?

Dark, intriguing and elegant.

Can you sleep the night before a show?

Usually there is too much work to sleep! I try to sneak in a few hours but it’s usually non-stop right up until the show.

What are some of your show day rituals?

When stress gets to me I go against a white wall and imagine myself on an island that’s serene and beautiful with fresh air and plenty of food.

What’s the one question you never want to be asked again?

Although being on Project Runway Canada was an amazing experience and certainly helped my career tremendously, I am a bit tired of discussing the ending. “Why did I come in second place?” “How did that make me feel”? It was a great honour but I have done so much since the show that I would like to focus on now.

What will you be doing the day after your show?

I will be showcasing my Matis by Lucian Matis so the whole thing starts all over again! And I love it!
