A fashion week day in the life of…Christopher Bates

Designers usually wait until after the last exit to make their appearance on the fashion week catwalk.

Not Christopher Bates The menswear talent took the runway just as we had settled into our seats, looking suave in a classic tuxedo and holding a mic that he used to introduce the collection and narrate each look.

There were colourful topcoats and hunting jackets in deep teal and purple that Bates said fit fall’s trend towards colourful outerwear. Details like zippers up the side of black denim, stays on the outside of shirt collars and driving gloves helped keep things looking less formal.

Describe your Fall 2013 collection?

My Fall 2013 theme is Bright Lights Big City. It’s a contemporary tailored menswear collection designed for navigating urban nightscapes in cutting-edge style.

What do you eat for breakfast on show day?

The same thing I eat for breakfast every day: a half a scoop of protein powder and 1.5 glasses of water, scrambled eggs + broccoli, raw whole oats with soy milk, banana, almonds, cinnamon, maple syrup, and raspberries, and a multivitamin.

What are some of your other show day rituals?

Dressing my best and trying to ignore my cell phone that pretty much buzzes off the hook. It’s the absolute worst possible time to try and get a hold of me for anything.

What’s the one interview question you never want to be asked again?

I’m a little of tired of answering why I got into fashion.

Is it easy to wind from the fashion show frenzy?

It’s very difficult but my life is frenzied in general. During show season, it’s just a little more harried. But, I like the rush. It’s intense. Live faster!
