A fashion week day in the life of…Duy

Some Fashion Week-day-in-the-life-of assignments are loaded with drama. Many designers, free creative spirits that they are, often have lots of last minute tasks to take care of before their collections hit the catwalk so we get to watch as they run around in a frenzy fitting dresses and running rehearsals in the hours leading up to their presentations.

Every season though, there’s one label that’s incredibly (okay, boringly) prepared. That was the case with Montreal-based Duy Nguyen who presented his fall collection on Tuesday evening. Every time we hoped to catch him in a moment of panic, our photographer Stefania Yarhi would find him hanging out by the already steamed and ordered racks looking cool as a cucumber.

Nguyen saved the drama for the catwalk and a show what was, perhaps, the most polished presentation we’ve seen in Toronto for a long time. Stand out pieces included grommeted dress shirts, herringbone suiting and a blue boucle varsity jacket layered over an evening gown cut from a more casual grey ribbed knit.

What are three words that describe your Fall 2013 collection?

Luxurious, powerful, chic.

Can you sleep the night before a show?

I sleep very well the night before the show since all the clothes are finished.

What are some of your show day rituals?

The only ritual that I have the day of the show is that I visualize the whole thing in my head.

What’s the one interview question your never want to be asked again?

The question that I hate in an interview is: “what is the trend of the season?” I don’t follow trends, so I don’t know and don’t care.

What will you be doing the day after your show?

I allow myself a day off and go see a French film. This season I’m seeing Les Saveurs Du Palais.
