We double dare even the happiest-with-hand-me-downs parents to resist the toys and togs at new Rosedale boutique Advice from a Caterpillar. Susan Dyer, along with her daughters Emily and Elizabeth, has launched a bright boutique that shuns overstuffed and extra-cutesy kiddie buys in favour of simple, modern finds for newborns to six-year-olds.

Mixed in with clothing from Neige and Toronto’s own Mini Mioche are pint-sized vintage clothing picks and teensy slippers made by France’s Collegien. The Baby Barolo collection includes sleeping bags, crib duvets and booties made with organic cotton and natural goose down.

Playthings range from heirloom-worthy Areaware rattles to multicoloured old-school rubber balls you can comfortably pass on to a new tyke when yours inevitably graduates to video games.

Advice from a Caterpillar picks: The Marc Vidal toy collection includes a set of how-to-draw animal cards, $10 made-in-Canada Bamboobino hooded wraps are a sweet way to swaddle little ones, $42 the cozy Baby Barolo sleeping bag is $320.
