Arthur Mendonça
Inspired by a journey to sunny Spain, Arthur Mendonça’s critically acclaimed spring collection is a sexy, Latin mix of flamenco ruffles and coastal cruisewear. This Ryerson grad honed his craft by designing menswear for the Good & Beder knitwear label and apprenticing with fellow designer David Dixon before launching his signature line in April 2002. Need to add this sassy ensemble to your spring wardrobe? Who doesn’t? Call 416-835-0929 for product availability or go to www.mendonca.ca.

Chris Hewson
One of Canada’s youngest designers, Chris Hewson was only 19 when he debuted with this sophisticated collection for spring 2003! Completely self-taught, he chose to pursue his love of fashion straight out of high school. With a financial backer in place, this Mississauga native has built his dream into a reality in, like, one semester. Channel St.-Tropez or Rio and flash it out in this banded stunner. For product availability call 416-937-5726 or check www.chrishewson.com.

Eryn Reid
Though formally trained at Ryerson Polytechnic University, Eryn Reid’s connection to fashion started early on in life. As a competitive figure skater, she was required to wear elaborate costumes. Not digging the available selection, she started sewing her own. Think sequins and trim. Her vibrant design style has stayed with her and is evident in this wave-patterned jacket with ruffle trim. Call 416-820-7705 for product availability or visit her site, www.erynreid.com.

Janet the Planet
Multi-tasking doesn’t come close to describing Janet the Planet. Talk about moonlighting. By day she’s a mechanical engineer at a chocolate factory and by night a fashion designer with such high-profile clients as Björk and Emm Gryner! Women musicians inspired Planet so much that she dedicated her fall 04 installation to 10 famous women in rock. Be a stellar standout in this Galaxy shawl, which is printed with a cosmic image from the Hubble Space Telescope. Available at www.janettheplanet.com.

Ariel Garten
You might know Ariel Garten as a College Street scenester with a signature line, Ariel, and super-cute boutique, Flavour Hall (500 College), where behind orange plexiglass doors you can find an explosion of Canadian designs, hers included. But what you might not know is that this fashion scene fixture holds a degree in neuroscience from U of T! Go on, get geometric in Ariel’s perfect study in circles: a cut-out shift dress, available at – where else? – Flavour Hall. 416-839-9943 or www.flavourhall.com.
