Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox, PS3, PC)

Rating: NNNN

Not so long ago, it seemed that first-person shooters loosely based on historical wars might lose some steam. Instead, we’ve experienced the opposite. The genre-defining Call Of Duty franchise has continued to push forward. A few key com-ponents have contributed to this success: rich storytelling, non-stop action and addictive multi-player. Call Of Duty: Black Ops has these ingredients and more.

Covert Cold War operations are the backdrop for this outing. Though brief, the campaign mode takes you on a journey full of intrigue and conspiracy as you recall memories from past exploits. You’ll travel to the usual locales, from Cuba to Russian rocket launch pads to the inner sanctum of the Pentagon. The action never stops you’re tossed into a variety of scenarios challenging you with a multitude of combat scenarios. There’s not much new in terms of features, but you’ll never notice, since the game keeps you engrossed from start to finish.

The multi-player action will be familiar in style, but there are new maps, weapons and a few tricks like explosives-laden remote-control cars. To keep things fresh, currency has been introduced. In addition to levelling up with experience points, you now have Call Of Duty points you use to purchase new gear and character customizations. More interesting is the use of points to buy into unique kill contracts and paid entry matches. It’s these high-stakes matches that have some of the most interesting play modes in the game that should keep you coming back for more.

The best shooter game of the season.
