WHO: Carly Hippsley, fashion design student at Ryerson
WHEN: Saturday, 2 pm
WHERE: The Clothing Show, Exhibition Place
CLOTHING: “My hightops are blue suede Kangaroos. They were $120 at Get Out Side (437 Queen West, 416-593-5598). These leg warmers were $20 in Edmonton. The beetle- and daisy-print tights I’ve got on were $30 in Vancouver, and I bought the fishnets at a dance store in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where I’m from. They were $15. They’re torn just from natural wear and tear. My pink plaid dress is from Borderline (331 Queen West, 416-599-9821) and cost me $130. The chain belt is from a shop in Kensington Market whose name I can’t remember. It was about $20. My crinoline was $20 in Vancouver, and my watch was $50 at Alkatraz (475 Queen West, 416-504-3609). I picked up this spiked wristband in Vancouver for $35. I have several tattoos, all of which were done by Dennis at a place called Drillers in Saskatchewan. All my piercings are also from my hometown, except for my nose ring, which I got at Stainless Studios (609 Queen West, 416-504-1433) by a woman who no longer works there. My triangle ring was $40 at one of the Queen West street vendor carts. The ring-finger ring was a gift from a friend. On my right hand, I’m wearing my grad ring and a ring my mom gave me as a Christmas present. My liquid eyeliner is made by L’Oreal. I get it for $9 at Shoppers Drug Mart (69 Yonge, 416-364-1948, and others).”
HAIR: “I cut and dye it myself.”
MY STYLE: “Colourful and eccentric. I’m inspired by Kandinsky’s colour and abstraction and the meaning behind his paintings.”
INTO: “Designs by Vivienne Westwood, sewing, designing, painting, sculpting and going to punk shows. The clothes I design are impractical – I design them as if they were to be hung in an art gallery.”
