Where to study: Upholstery

As we become more concerned about conservation, we tend to invest in higher-quality furniture and then repair or update it rather than toss it at the first sign of wear. Becoming an upholsterer lets you bring beauty to the world while also keeping couches and chairs from becoming landfill. Industry trends indicate a need for young upholsterers to fill the gap left by retirees, so this is a smart industry to consider.

Upholsterers are often entrepreneurs with their own business, or they work with interior design firms. Some have art or design degrees, while others learn via apprenticeship or through a specific program. It’s a great way to put your love of fine craftsmanship to work. Who knows? You might even end up with your own HGTV show!
