DOLL FACTORY BY DAMZELS 1122 Queen East, 416-598-0509 www.dollfactorystudios.com Rating: NNNNN
There goes Leslieville! Damzels in This Dress and Doll Factory Studios style-presarios Rory Lindo and Kelly Freeman have opened their first retail outlet in the middle of the Queen East neighbourhood's gift shops and mid-century furniture stores, and stocked it with rocker-girl-friendly fashions and devilish knick-knacks.
The launch coincides with the return of Damzels in This Dress (the 14-year-old line went on hiatus for a year while Lindo and Freeman launched the Doll Factory Studios collection of record-sleeve-packed camisoles and teddies), and racks are loaded with knit numbers in gothic purples, burgundies and Beetlejuicy stripes. The collection is known for its vintage details, and Damzels' devotees are already flooding in to drool over signature puffy sleeves and empire waists.
Lindo and Freeman's customers always query them on what accessories they should pair with their favourite frock, so the boutique is full of handbags, baubles and cardigans covered in rockabilly red roses, cowboy boots and anchors. Doll Factory by Damzels picks : Their red knit Kiki-dee dress delivers maximum va-va-va-voom with its ribbed waistband and tie neck, $130; Philadelphia label Sailor Jerry prints tattoo-style swallows on its little black dress, $165; cat ladies can pin on Barbie's Basement Jewellery's sparkly kitty brooch, $32.
Look for : A winter calendar full of store sales and how-to workshops to ride Leslieville's DIY-happy wave.
Hours : Tuesday to Saturday 11 am to 6 pm, Sunday noon to 5 pm.
