One of Canada’s leading conservation groups and a negotiator on the historic Boreal Forest Agreement of 2010 has announced it’s walking away from the once-lauded forestry deal between logging corps and enviros. “After three years, not a single hectare of the boreal forest has been protected, and of 51 herds of threatened caribou, only one caribou action plan has been developed,” says Canopy. The org joins Greenpeace in abandoning the deal that kept eco orgs from badmouthing forestry companies in exchange for greener logging practices. Ungagged, Canopy’s going after Sprint and Scholastic’s paper sourcing.
NUKE SUIT
Miffed at the rubber-stamping of billions for remodelling the Darlington nuke reactors, a coalition of eco orgs has just launched a suit asking the courts to overturn the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s enviro assessment of the project. The Canadian Environmental Law Association, Greenpeace Canada, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and Northwatch say the EA failed to consider the impacts of a major accident, the woes around the long-term management of nuclear waste and potential effects on Lake Ontario’s fish and water quality.
