Mad for Meyers
Next week we'll be bringing you a roundup of Toronto Fashion Week 's biggest hits and misses but one newbie designer is already in the running to be our personal fave. On March 9, Jason Meyers (www.jasonmeyers.net) sent 16 luxe looks down the Social 's concrete bar. Rowdy Queen Westers hooted for his ruffled black lace blouses and balloon-hemmed skirts. Some smart retailer should scoop up Meyers so ahead-of-the-curve fashionistas can add his lipstick-red, bow-tied skirt to their fall gotta-have-it list.
As U of T kids made their post-class retreat up St. George last Tuesday, an explosion of fire crackers blanketed them in a layer of red confetti in front of the Bata Shoe Museum (327 Bloor West). The hoopla signalled the opening of the museum's new Watched By Heaven exhibit of children's footwear inspired by the Chinese zodiac. Shoe-aholics were led into the gallery by a drummed lion dance, where they were met by displays of pint-sized embroidered silk slippers and dragon-appliquéd booties. 416-979-7799, www.batashoemuseum.ca.
Couture vultures who haven't got their kimono culture fix should visit Magic Pony (694 Queen West), where the work of Tokyo artist Mamechiyo is on display until April 3. Mamechiyo twists traditional Japanese dress with vintage fabrics and colourful prints. Also on display are nature dioramas constructed on top of wooden sandals, and miniature screens appliquéd with sequins and lace. The $900 tag on an obi-ed houndstooth robe is steep, but the price is right on $15 polka-dot-printed handkerchiefs. www.magic-pony.com.

In a television universe overpopulated by cookie-cutter reality TV, I'm proud to proclaim that my boob tube obsession is Life Network's well-cut Project Runway . Fashion designers from across the U.S. gather in New York to sew and sass their way to three coveted spots during Fashion Week. Last year's winner, Jay McCarroll , is featured Sunday (March 19) at 8 pm in Project Jay , a doc about his post-finale fashion career, following a marathon of this season's first 10 episodes, starting at 10 am.
