While our taxi inched through the cabs and SUV limos lining Bloor on September 9, the film festival's first Saturday night, we spotted Peter Halpin and Mary Ng putting the finishing touches on their painfully chic designer boutique, Noir (151 Bloor West, 416-966-6647). The store launched the next day with a brunch-time cocktail party where guests' attention was divided between the sleek smoked-mirror ceiling, racks of coveted Blumarine sweaters and Yohji Yamamoto brogues and artist Jesper Just's It Will All End In Tears film installation.
As festival parties drag on and complimentary cocktails start sloshing together in your tummy, you entertain yourself by ranking the quality of the night's gift bag. The swag dished out at Lush Magazine's (www.lushmag. com) fall launch September 13 at Modo (122 Avenue Road) was primo, and the star of the sack was a copy of the glossy Toronto-produced fashion rag. Hit your local newsstand for one and scan through highlights including an haute hiphop fashion spread featuring ex-Destiny's Child singer LeToya Luckett in locally designed couture.
Last week we met up with Toronto Alternative Fashion Week (FAT, www.alternativefashionweek.com) organizer Vanja Vasic to get the scoop on the three nights of design, art and music she has planned for the Distillery District (55 Mill) from October 17 to 19. Local fashion insiders have been grumbling about Vasic's decision to run these at the same time as Toronto Fashion Week shows, but Vasic see no conflict. She says her late-night event will be a launch pad for new talents where industry folks who'd rather skip the after-party circuit can check out the city's next style wave.
If you're a fashion fanatic, your nose has been pressed to your computer screen lately as you've clicked through style.com's coverage of the New York Fashion Week spring collections. One of the season's standouts is Toronto designer Jeremy Laing, who presented his first runway show of slouchy/structured separates in black, navy, white and yellow colour combos. Log on to www.jeremylaing.com for a full look or visit his fall line in the World Design Lab at Holt Renfrew (50 Bloor West, 416-922-2333).
